The Pitmen Painters

The Ashington Art Group

The Ashington Art Group

The Ashington Art Group

It all started in 1934, and continued until 1983.....this is a photo of The Ashington Art Group in London.

They weren't all pitmen. They had a wide range of jobs and interests

Out Tribute

The Ashington Art Group

The Ashington Art Group

Our Activity Room has been dedicated to the Pitmen Painters.

26 of their paintings, each 70% of their original size adorn two walls, along with information about the group's history

Their Hut

The Ashington Art Group

Their Hut

They met weekly, firstly at the YMCA in Ashington, then from 1943 in this hut which was located where our community garden is now.

More information is on display.

We give regular presentations on the group itself, its members and how it links with our institute. It is a fascinating story which is part of Ashington's history
