Table events we've organised

For many years the main activity revolved around the billiard tables the institute had ...originally two then increasing to three about 20 years ago.

The tables are kept in very good condition, brushed and ironed very regularly and reclothed when required.

Other equipment is also high standard.

Former World Champion, Joe Johnson gave us a great day in 2019, playing 10 local players in a fantastic atmosphere. 

The day was such a success that we had the confidence to get the next one arranged as soon as we could.

Although Covid stopped us in our tracks, Cliff Thorburn was on our radar....

And here he is!  The Grinder gave us a wonderful day in January, 2022, playing six frames and showing us some fantastic trick shots.

At 74 years of age, he was still a great attraction, making loads of time for our people and letting us into one or two secrets from his amazing career.

1991 World Champion John Parrott gave us another great day in October, 2022. The former BBC pundit, ex-Question of Sport Captain and Everton fan had us in stitches with his quips and one-liners. A super day of entertainment - he won 8-0.

Multi-time World Billiards Champion Dave Causier gave us another great day in November, 2023, then again in 2024, 2025 and in March 2026.

In March he was joined by World Number Four, Peter Sheehan.

Multi-time World Snooker Champion Mark Williams gave us another great day in July, 2024. 

In eight frames he made four breaks over 100 and two over 60 and took part in a fab q and a session - top bloke!

Muti-time ranking winner, Mark Allen came along  in March 2025 and put on a fantastic day for us.

Muti-time ranking winner, and former World Finalist Ali Carter came along  in September 2025 and put on another fantastic day.

We run dominoes, snooker and billiards competitions, mainly for our members, during the summer and over Christmas....they are always very popular and very competitive!

We run internal billiards and snooker leagues exclusively for our members...free lights and lots of banter makes Monday and Thursday evenings very popular.

Finishing off the comps with a buffet and with a bit of prize money at stake, we're full every time.

We've played friendly billiards matches with clubs from Hartlepool and Scarborough, played at Whitby, Edinburgh, and we now play Carlisle home and away every summer.
